4.3. Extreme / unusual environments' effects
(Classic psychological ideas about effects of extreme and unusual environment on the individuality)

       The explosion at the Chernobyl NPP and its consequences — fire, radioactive emission and contamination, long wide-scale mitigation work — turned the affected area into a very unusual, extreme environment for the insiders. That is why, in order to create a proper background for understanding of the Chernobyl impacts on the liquidators, it seems reasonable to examine some general regularities of psychological impacts of extreme and unusual environments.
       It seems to be rather characteristic, that in the survey of “classic”, pre-Chernobyl state of the art in this field of psychology (Suefeld 1987), upon which this subchapter is based, the word “radiation” is not even mentioned.
